Reddit Child Pornography Ban of the Day

Reddit Child Pornography Ban of the Day

Reddit Child Pornography Ban of the Day: Reddit has announced a new policy banning the posting of “suggestive or sexual content featuring minors,” and deleted all subreddits that “focus on sexualization of children.”

Although Reddit has always deleted and reported child pornography posts, the new policy also bans the legal — and sometimes borderline-legal — images in subreddits like /r/jailbait, which was shut down due to a public outcry back in October 2011, and then reinstated with new moderators.

The new ban may have been inspired by a campaign started on the SomethingAwful forums, encouraging SA members to contact media outlets about Reddit “actively trading child pornography.”

Reddit’s position last year was that “We’re a free speech site and the cost of that is there’s offensive stuff on there…Once we start taking down some things we find offensive, then we’re no longer a free speech site and no longer a platform for everyone.”

In the announcement of the child porn ban, Reddit’s admins addressed free speech concerns, writing “We understand that this might make some of you worried about the slippery slope from banning one specific type of content to banning other types of content. We’re concerned about that too, and do not make this policy change lightly or without careful deliberation.”
