Incredible Comic Book Collection of the Day: A collection of 345 comic books — including 44 of the 100 most valuable Golden Age issues — has sold for $3.5 million at an auction in Dallas, TX.
The collection was sold by 31-year-old Texas man named Michael Rorrer, who found it while cleaning out the basement of his late great-aunt’s house. The comics originally belonged to Rorrer’s great-uncle, Billy Wright, who had collected them since childhood.
Some of Wright’s prize issues included Action Comics #1 (the first appearance of Superman), Detective Comics #27 (the first appearance of Batman) and Captain America #2, all incredibly well-preserved.
“The scope of this collection is, from a historian’s perspective, dizzying,” said J.C. Vaughn, associate publisher of the Overstreet comic book price guide.
The most valuable comic in the collection was a copy of Detective Comics #27, graded 6.5. It brought in $523,000.
