geek news - Marvel Casting News of the Day

Mads Mikkelsen, perhaps best known as the baddie in Casino Royale, is in talks to play the villain in next year’s Thor 2. As for who Mikkelsen will be playing, that’s still an open question.

Despite the appearance of a certain space titan in an Avengers post-credit sequence, word on the street — okay, word from Chris “Thor” Hemsworth himself — is that Thanos won’t be Thor 2‘s main antagonist.

“We need a bigger fish,” Hemsworth said, with typical God of Thunder swagger. He says Thanos as a villain would be “too easy.”

Meanwhile, Iron Man 3 has picked up Ashley Hamilton as Firepower, a villain who creates a suit to rival Tony Stark’s, and later finds himself in the employ of Stark’s archnemesis, The Mandarin.

It’s not yet clear whether the Mandarin himself will appear in the film, but Variety has confirmed rumors that the plot will borrow elements from Warren Ellis’ six-issue Iron Man: Extremis story arc, which involves the spread of a nanotech virus.

Thor 2 hits on November 15, 2013, and Iron Man 3 arrives May 3, 2013.

geek news - SpaceX Update of the Day

SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft has passed within 2.4 kilometers of the International Space Station, en route to becoming the first commercial cargo craft to dock with the ISS.

The photo above shows the Dragon as viewed by ISS astronauts, who are preparing for the vessel’s historic arrival Friday morning.

More photos are up in NASA’s Expedition 31 Flickr gallery.

geek news - Dark Knight Rises Banners of the Day

The Dark Knight Rises publicity push continues with four large new banners showing a Gotham City ravaged by the battle between Batman and Bane.

Judging by these images, we’re in for a pretty epic fight scene when the police meet Bane’s followers on the Gotham streets. We’ve got the two sides rallying their respective armies, the beginning of the battle, and Catwoman piloting a Batpod with guns blazing.

Unfortunately, it’s still another couple of months before TDKR‘s July 20 release date.

“The Rains of Castamere,” House Lannister’s favorite revenge ballad from A Song of Ice and Fire, comes to life courtesy of indie rockers The National.

The lyrics are ripped from the pages of George R.R. Martin’s novels, but the arrangement is all new. The track is due to appear on the Game of Thrones season 2 soundtrack.

This collaboration has Hipster Cersei Lannister‘s fingerprints all over it.

Everyone’s favorite more-presidential, less-in-jail version of Wesley “Blade” Snipes, Abraham Lincoln, stars in a badass new red band trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Is Honest Abe fighting for freedom? You bet your stovepipe hat he is! It appears vampires want to secede from the union and form their own nation — and also drink the lifeblood of humans, and other not-so-nice things — and Mr. President is prepared to kick four score and seven vampire asses to stop that from happening.

    tl;dr: there’s vampire decapitation galore!

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter opens June 22.

Although we still have a few months to wait for the return of Doctor Who, CBBC has just aired a brand-new mini-episode called “Good As Gold,” starring Amy and The Doctor.

As you may be able to tell from the part where they flip the TARDIS to “adventure setting,” this delightful mini was written by primary school kids whose sense of awesome is still untainted by the cynicism of adulthood.

geek news - Transformer IRL of the Day

Way back in 1993, before the movie version of Tony Stark ever improvised his first Iron Man suit, a frenchman named Emile Leray escaped being stranded in the desert in northwest Africa by converting his broken-down car into a working motorcycle.

Unlike Stark, Leray managed to hack together his escape plan without essential tools like welding torches and arc reactors. All he had was a hacksaw. Apparently, Leray drilled the necessary holes by bending, sawing, and then unbending various metal parts.

It all sounds a bit farfetched — after all, repairing a car has to be easier than building an entire motorcycle, right? — but it’s apparently a true story.

If you’re able to read French, you can find the original story at Chameau D’acier.

geek news - Unrelated to The Avengers of the Day

Highland Park Distillery‘s Thor, a 16-year single malt Scotch, has nothing to do with a certain record-breaking superhero team-up movie, but it does conveniently exist at a time when the Son of Odin is back on the big screen.

Although this top-shelf beverage shares a name with Thor, its price tag seems more appropriate for Tony Stark. One bottle will set you back $245.

If you don’t like your whiskey straight, feel free to celebrate with some Avengers-themed cocktails instead.
