Space Shuttle Landing of the Day

Jun. 1, 2011

Space Shuttle Landing of the Day: Space Shuttle Endeavour landed on Earth for the final time early this morning. The shuttle tallied over 122 million miles during its 25 flights, and is now headed for retirement at the California Science Center Museum in Los Angeles.

Endeavour’s legacy includes a satellite-rescue mission, Hubble Space Telescope repairs and, in its final mission, putting the finishing touches on the International Space Station. Just after Endeavour landed, Space Shuttle Atlantis rolled out to the launch pad, where it will take off for the shuttle program’s final mission in July.

Spacewalk of the Day

May. 27, 2011

Spacewalk of the Day: Space Shuttle Endeavour crew members Mike Fincke and Gregory Chamitoff today completed the final spacewalk of NASA’s 30-year shuttle program, attaching an extension pole to complete assembly of the International Space Station.

Space station residents will continue to perform necessary spacewalks, but this was the last one by shuttle crew members. No spacewalks are planned for NASA’s next and final shuttle mission, scheduled to be flown by Atlantis later this summer.

Space Interview of the Day

May. 19, 2011

Space Interview of the Day: Miles O’Brien from PBS Newshour had a chance to interview Commander Mark Kelly and the rest of the Space Shuttle Endeavour crew this morning, while the shuttle was 250 miles above New Zealand, traveling at 17,500 miles per hour.

Much to the dismay of space nerds, O’Brien spent a large part of the interview talking about Kelly’s wife, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who just had brain surgery. There were a few actual space questions, though: the crew talked about some minor tile damage to the shuttle that they may need to inspect, discussed the use of social media in space, and ended with a somersault.

Skip to 30:33 for the in-flight acrobatics.

Legos in Space of the Day

May. 17, 2011

Legos in Space of the Day

Legos in Space of the Day: Space Shuttle Endeavour‘s final mission is to deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer to the International Space Station, but the shuttle is also carrying some tech that’s a bit more familiar to most of us: Legos!

Endeavour is bringing up a bunch of space-themed Lego sets for astronaut and current ISS resident Cady Coleman to put together in a clear glove box. It’s part of a series of demonstrations for kids, showing how simple machines work in space.

Building Lego spaceships and dreaming of going into space is cool, but building Lego spaceships in space is even cooler.

Space Shuttle Launch Video of the Day

May. 17, 2011

Space Shuttle Launch Video of the Day: A lucky passenger on a flight from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to White Plains, NY took a video of yesterday’s Space Shuttle Endeavour launch. You can see him watching the first part of the event on TV, and then looking out the window as the shuttle comes into view over the clouds.

Maybe he wasn’t just lucky, though. The video is framed so well that it looks like he planned it this way. And who actually flies to White Plains, anyway?

Another Space Shuttle Photo of the Day

Another Space Shuttle Launch Photo of the Day

Another Space Shuttle Launch Photo of the Day: We’ve already seen a view of this morning’s Space Shuttle Endeavour launch from above the clouds, but this shot from the ground by Trey Ratcliffe gives a whole other perspective.

I take back what I said about the crowd at the launch site being jealous they didn’t see the show from a plane. This view is even cooler.

One question, though: where will the shuttle end up when it comes out the blue portal on the other side?

Space Shuttle Photo of the Day

Space Shuttle Photo of the Day

Space Shuttle Photo of the Day: Twitter user Stefanie Gordon caught a photo (and a video) of Space Shuttle Endeavour rising above the clouds from her window seat on a flight from NYC to Palm Beach.

At least a few of the 300,000+ shuttle watchers who swarmed Cape Canaveral for the launch will see this and think, “Gee, why didn’t I come up with that?”

Space Shuttle Launch of the Day

May. 16, 2011

Space Shuttle Launch of the Day: Space Shuttle Endeavour finally blasted off on its final flight — and the penultimate flight for NASA’s shuttle program — this morning. A crowd of between 350,000 and 400,000 people showed up to watch the launch, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, wife of shuttle commander Mark Kelly.

Today is also the 19th anniversary of Endeavour‘s first successful mission. The shuttle has flown over 116 million miles over 283 days in space, carrying a Hubble repair crew and the first American piece of the international space station along the way.

After this 16-day mission, Endeavour will retire to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

Check out a great photo from the launch after the jump.

Launch Delay of the Day

May. 1, 2011

Launch Delay of the Day

Launch Delay of the Day: Space Shuttle Endeavour won’t launch until at least the end of the week, according to NASA. Hopes for a Monday launch were dashed due to a faulty switch box in the engine compartment.

Endeavour astronauts have returned to Houston until the switch box is replaced and tested for two days. Even if the shuttle is in working shape this week, the launch may be delayed again because it conflicts with the deployment of a military satellite on Friday.

Launch Delay of the Day

Apr. 29, 2011

endeavour scrub

Launch Delay of the Day: NASA has scrubbed today’s Space Shuttle Endeavour launch due to issues with heaters for the shuttle’s auxiliary power unit. Endeavour was all fueled up — a process that takes three hours — before the delay was announced.

Endeavour will remain grounded for at least 48 hours while NASA investigates the problem. That’s a bummer for the people who turned out to see the launch today, including the Obama family and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (whose husband, Mark Kelly, is the commander of Endeavour).
